PM Says Frozen Meat Imports to Be Suspended to Boost Local Meat Products

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that the measures to suspend the import of some offal and frozen meat for six months starting in March are to promote animal husbandry and promote local meat products to market.

However, he said that the measure is not sustainable. He said the temporary suspension of imports of frozen meat was a good option for linking farmers and buyers, especially to boost livestock production. It also encourages farmers to strengthen technical and quality animal husbandry.

"This intervention is not just a sustainable measure that we want to do all the time. We have to do something sustainable to ensure competitive animal husbandry," he said.

During a meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture on January 30, the Prime Minister instructed the relevant ministries and institutions to jointly increase competition and prevent the import of frozen meat from abroad.
